This shot was so fun! It was a mini shoot for a class my friend Abby and I taught on Location Lighting. This shot in particular showed the look of a beauty dish modifier on location. So this little girl is the daughter of a neighbor of mine and she was more that willing to dress up in my awesome 80′s cheerleader outfit and jump repeatedly on a trampoline for me.

Okay, I am really late posting these, since it’s pretty obvious they were taken in the fall. Well, yeah, that’s how things go for me September through April. I have clients that need my attention so my blog gets neglected.

Well, here finally is little A’s 18 month pictures. Just in time for me to do her two year pictures in the next couple of weeks!

It’s been a really tough winter. So very, very cold. Too cold really to drag kids out into the snow despite all my awesome ideas. Well, this was one of those ideas. The snow is gone, but I finally had a moment so we went and photographed it anyway.

Princess E was more than happy to play dress up for me in this dress and crown, and she is carrying one of my most prized posessisons, “Cecile”, an antique book of the most beautiful leather (anyone who knows me knows my passion for old things, especially books and cameras).

About a year ago I had taken my boy to Salt Lake to photograph him in this outfit I had dreamed up. And going back through my blog I realized I NEVER posted them! So there is the shot I did one year ago.

Now as much as I like this image I still wanted to do more. So this week a challenge was presented and I saw no better opportunity to break this costume back out. I am so glad it still fit him as the shirts are size 4 and my “little” four year old is a size six.

Well, Sunday night I decided to give this a try. I wanted it dark and where we live we have these little “alleys” on the ground level to get you through the units of the condos. I liked the look of it and thought it would be awesome at night. So we go out and we are setting up and are almost ready when… the lights came on! Darn it! The whole tunnel was all nice and well lit and safe and it totally ruined my shot. So we packed it up and went home. The next morning we woke up to SNOW. That’s right, it’s mid April and we got an inch of snow overnight. (No complaints, they got like a foot in Colorado. So glad I don’t live there….) But the skies were overcast, and thanks to that, the tunnel I wanted to use was relatively dark so we went for it! Set everything up, dressed him back in the costume and shot for about 5 minutes. No kidding. All this effort for a five minute shoot. Well, it was WELL worth it.

You may or may not recognize this little guy from other images I have done (remember the little boy in the ape costume on my homepage slideshow?). He hasn’t always been thrilled with being in front of my camera. In fact, getting him to smile for me or even be comfortable with me at all has been a real challenge.

But when I got him into the studio this time, he just lit right up and was a serious delight. I can’t wait to do more!

Is the Crazy Over?

Nope! It’s not! My poor website and blog get so neglected because I would rather spend my time doing portraits than sitting at my computer. I have had so much happening and it’s time to do some updating! I had posted about my limited edition Santa Portraits, which was a HUGE success! We were able to help provide Christmas for families in need (more than we had planned) thanks to my wonderful clients and friend and I am already looking forward to next year! Don’t forget, next year will be different!

Now be patient. I will catch you up on what I have been working on since OCTOBER! Wow! That was my last post! Oh, so much has happened, so much fun! I can’t wait to share!

So my friend Erin from Erin Summerill Photography just got this new house. And in Erin’s new house is the most awesome kitchen. I told Erin I wanted to do pictures in her kitchen. Erin said “okay”. So I showed up one day and did them.

Here they are, my favorite pair in the whole world to photograph, “Max and Ruby” decorating cookies in Erin’s kitchen. They really don’t get much cuter than this.

Playing in the rain

A challenge was issued during a recent creativeLIVE webinar with Kevin Kubota and he challenged viewers to plan out and execute a shoot using location lighting. An idea came to me from one of the images he showed of a senior.

I have long wanted to do a shoot with water, but yeah, you can’t just stand in the rain with the gear, so two weeks ago I put together a rainmaker out of PVC pipe, and scoured the web for the right outfit. I’ve been swamped with work and hadn’t gotten to pull it out and use it. It was really making me crazy because I was all ready, but just needed thirty minutes to put it together. Well, today called for rain, but it wasn’t raining this morning and I had some free time so I put my almost six year old in the gear, put the set in the street, hooked up the hose, and went to town.

But all my fun was completely spoiled when it really started to rain and we had to rush to finish with my daughter holding a rain umbrella over my flashes which were in a stand a few feet from me and I can only hope that no water crept into my lens.

One reason I was inspired to reschoot my scientist set, is that my almost four year old is obsessed with the show “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”. The lab coat from the images is actually his lab coat. He had to have one just like Flint Lockwood and he sits in his “lab” (the bottom of the hall closet) and invents anything “spray on”, shoes, hugs, pizza…

So of course I had to use my little man in some of these images too. But he pulled so many faces that this was the best we got.

As I was going through this set of images, my husband says to me that the images would be so much better with a chalkboard behind him instead of a white wall. (Yes, my husband is brilliant.) So Back to the studio we went for take two. This time I brought a little girl also, put them in front of my chalkboard drop, and I just love the result.
